An hour and a half north-west of Santiago, Valparaíso is a port town splashed with paint, poetry, and sinuous streets to encourage you to lose yourself in one of the most interesting urban museums in Latin America (I say "encourage" only because I got lost about eight times in the few days I was there).

And lucky for all the "I'm too cool for tour" folks reading this, you can get the full experience on your own. Just head to the Cerro Alegre and Concepción areas for street art to slap you in the face. Seriously.  It's everywhere.

Here's some of what you can expect to find in just a 20-minute stroll.

Valparaíso, how absurd you haven’t combed your hair, you’ve never had time to get dressed, life has always surprised you.
— Pablo Neruda

Same, Valparaíso...same.
